Ableton Live Expert Laura Escudé on Being Behind the Sounds on Music’s Biggest Tours

You might not know Laura Escudé’s name, but there’s a good chance you’ve seen her work. As a live show programmer, she’s collaborated with Kanye West, JAY-Z, Logic and Charli XCX. She’s programmed music for Cirque du Soleil and American Idol.

And through her company, Electronic Creatives, she manages an entire team of programmers and playback engineers that’s expanded her client base even further, to include such artists as Drake, The Weeknd, Pentatonix and Harry Styles.

As one of the pioneers in live show programming — especially the use of Ableton Live software, now widely regarded as the industry standard — Escudé has helped reshape how the concert industry uses electronic music and digital playback across virtually every genre of music.

Our Tech School on SOONish Podcast

Excited to be sharing with you the latest SOONish Podcast: A tech-and-culture podcast from @hubspokeaudio and journalist Wade Roush. “The future is shaped by technology—but technology is shaped by us.”

“We can’t predict what kind of music people will want to make or hear in the future. But judging from the sounds coming out of today’s studios and clubs, it’s a good bet that the tunes of tomorrow will be heavily mediated by digital technology.

This week’s show asks how software has changed the way composers and performers make music, and how our tools for creating music will evolve in the near future.”

We were psyched to get them in touch with alummmni Biyeun who says:

I spent like 5 or 6 hours in [Tresor] and danced until I didn’t have the energy anymore, and it was therapeutic. The music is so powerful it can take you into a completely different state. My initial reaction was: Why haven’t I heard this before?

Listen to Biyeun wax even more philosophically about how she learned to DJ, her tips to success, Vault Boston, and much more…

Even our Co-Founder David Day gets in on the action:

That is your future of music right there: Everyone is a musician, we’re all making music any time, all the time, and all we hear is new music, and it’s from us.

Thank you SOONish!

Speaking of technology, have you taken a virtual tour of our technology lab(s)?

Remix Winner: Preston Powers

We have a winner! Last month, we held our first-ever Ableton User Group Remix Challenge and invited the music production community to take a stab at Digital Den’s latest release from Subalias. Specifically, the song “Take Me Out”:

The winner is Preston Powers a/k/a $PIC¥ BØ¥$!

From a production standpoint it’s mixed well, and the sound design is on-point. Stylistically, I love the energy … this track slaps! — Subalias

Here’s a quick Q&A with Preston Powers

Subalias said this track slaps! How did you get it just right?
I know a really, really good ghost producer… Just kidding! The little things like compression, reverb, eq, filters, panning, saturation and automation really add up in the end. Don’t be afraid to slap some effects on a sound; if it sounds better, keep it! If it doesn’t, drop it and move on!

Which do you think is the best part of the jam?
The second drop unexpectedly switching up causes a small explosion in my head that gets me going! My favorite element is that rolling bass coming in at 54s and 2:26 – Takes Me Out … back to Europe.

What do you enjoy most about Ableton?
What’s nice about Ableton is there are so many resources out there to help you reach that mastery level. Shout-out to Mmmmmaven! (and YouTube, heh!)

Preston wins a dope prize pack which includes the *dope* Making Music (Creative Strategies for Electronic Music Producers) book, Ableton expansion packs, and more!
