Here at Mmmmaven, our Co-Founder and Executive Director Alex Maniatis, in league with our Managing Director Polina Starobinets, put on the Make It New weekly party in addition to running the school. Of course, our ridiculous supporting staff is always worth a thanks, high-five, or fist-bump!
But for over thirteen years, the award-winning weekly at the Middlesex Lounge in Central Square, brings in guests from around the world to show off the latest in music technology, beat-making, and general fun-having.
For our students, they get the chance to watch a legend do their thing, and for the wider audience, it’s a chance to see some huge global names in an intimate space with amazing sound.
We keep bringing Roman back to Make It New because he never disappoints. A consummate professional, gifted musician, and, of course, incredible DJ. All catered to do one thing: Give you a night you won’t soon forget.
But you don’t have to take our word for it…
“Flügel’s deft hand takes all the elements of a house anthem and turns them into a simple sigh.” – Pitchfork
“Flügel’s icy keyboards and piano flourishes sneak through like flowers through the cracks in the hard, grey cement” – SPIN
“Always rich with intricacies and subtle flourishes, Flügel’s music typically straddles several electronic micro-genres often within any single creation.” – Resident Advisor
“They’re examples of Flügel’s unique sensibility, deft touch, and expressive, unmistakable voice.” – Pitchfork
Whether you know it or not, Polina is crucial to our operations. As Director of Hospitality for Together Boston (and year-round at #MakeItNew), she meets and greets many different artists from around the world. More importantly, she’s the Director of Marketing and Communications for the school and lab, keeping up with the latest in digital trends to propagate our mission: to extend technology to musicians everywhere.
It so happens she’s a huge fan of drum and bass, broken beats, and raw techno. So, without further adieu, here are her top 5 DJ mixes of 2015.
1: Om Unit
Stylistically I hope to have brought the more etheric side of my work to the forefront for this selection, making it, I hope a good repeated listen. I think the best mixes take their time and fill a space around other tasks rather than demanding your entire concentration for an hour or more.

This Thursday we have some very special guests for Make it New (#MIN10). The well travelled and diverse Roman Flugel will be joining us along with South London Ordnance. The German producer has dabbled in house, techno, electro, ambient, IDM, and more over the course of his career, working both as a solo artist (using his own name and a host of aliases) and along with others in a number of collaborative projects. Roman has also lent a hand in running Frankfurt labels that include Playhouse, Klang Elektronik, and Ongaku Musik.
Listen to Roman’s mix he made for xlr8r for a groovy, spaced out preview of the jams that are to come. Transitioning between dreamy swirling landscapes and more funky disco flair, Roman Flugel will transport you to a place where time stops and dancing reigns supreme.
You too can be in this magical world by coming to Make it New this Thursday at 9 at Middlesex Lounge on Mass ave in Cambridge. Check the Facebook page for more information.
