With Together five days away, the excitement over the surefire amazing sets and artists is building around Boston. But where can you go when you’ve danced yourself clean?

Amidst all the thumping subwoofers, you should take time to recharge your batteries and learn more about the technology and culture behind the music at Mmmaven’s Recharge Lounge.

This series of FREE events will be held at Mmmaven’s office and will feature a wide array of events and lectures that you want to miss. The full line-up can be found on the official Together schedule, but we wanted to take some time to highlight a few of the events you can experience.


AMERICA & THE NETHERLANDS: A HISTORY OF DANCE MUSIC

Join the conversation with Mark Van Bergen, author of Dutch Dance on the history and international origins of electronic dance music in party culture both in America and the Netherlands (1970-present).


INNOVATIVE ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENT SOUND CAPTURE W/ YOUR HEAVEN®

A live demonstration of the Your Heaven® Close-Up® Mic System, an affordable product that allows you to easily integrate acoustic instruments like guitars, strings and drums into your music. With a unique combination of both the isolation needed for live performance and the fidelity you’d normally only get in a studio, you can amplify, record or sample beautiful acoustic instruments live, right on stage as you perform – with no feedback or cross-talk problems. We’ll show you how to use it with acoustic guitar, electric guitar and drums. We will also demonstrate how the Your Heaven® Close-Up® can be incorporated into both the production and live performance setup of an electronic musician, to be processed and used as a trigger source for midi instruments.


THE ULTIMATE DJ CONTROLLER – DENON DJ MCX8000 WORKSHOP

Denon DJ Project Manager Jason Stout takes you on a guided tour of this year’s controller of controllers, the MCX8000. In his presentation he’ll walk you through Denon DJ’s Engine software, its integration with Serato DJ, how to seamlessly mix between multiple sources on the fly, and all the unique features on the hardware control surface.


LINK TOGETHER- LIVE LINK JAM SESSION w/ PUSH 2
Fri, May 20, 5:00 PM > 6:00 PM

Whether you are making music with Ableton Live or any one of a host of IOS apps, Ableton Link enables you to play in time with other musicians over a network. In this session, Ableton’s Ben Casey gives you the lowdown and introduces some of his favorite Link compatible apps.

We’ll conclude the session with a live jam featuring Ableton and Mmmmaven instructors.


ABLETON PUSH SAMPLE CHALLENGE
Fri, May 20, 7:00 PM > 8:00 PM

For this session we invite you to bring along a vinyl record of your choice. Ableton’s Ben Casey will demonstrate how to sample it, chop it and turn it into something new in just 45 minutes using the sampling workflows in Ableton Push 2.


MUSIC CREATION WITH NOVATION CIRCUIT
Sat, May 21, 1:00 PM > 3:00 PM

This workshop is a general overview highlighting what Novation’s new Groovebox / Step Sequencer, Circuit, is capable of and how it can be used in various scenarios such as standalone, with external gear (demonstrated with Novation Bass Station II), and with a DAW (demonstrated with Ableton Live).

SYNTHESIZER PETTING ZOO

On Sunday, May 22nd Together Boston is celebrating the synthesizer era by holding a “petting zoo” inside the Mmmmaven Project labs 12pm until 4pm we will be displaying a wide array of synthesizers, MIDI controllers, and DJ gear. We welcome music lovers of all ages to stop by and try out the gear.

These events are sure to be informative, engaging, and at times, even entertaining! Whether you want to get your hands on classic vintage synths, learn about the latest Ableton tech, or just go crate digging, the Mmmmaven Recharge lounge has a little bit of something for everyone. And did we mention it’s all free? So take a well-deserved break from your grooving during Together and stop on by.

Together’s lineup this year is pretty incredible, but if that’s all you know then you’re missing half the fun! During the day, Together will have events here at Mmmmaven studios and at District Hall ranging from talks, to presentations, to workshops, and more!

See below for a highlight of each day, or check out the schedule for the full list of events.

Monday

Mmmmaven Recharge Lounge (5-8PM): Every day you can come to Mmmmaven (614 Massachusetts Avenue #2) to relax, listen to music, charge your phone, and drink plenty of water! On Monday at 6, come see ToUch Performance (pictured below) present a master class on collaboration between DJs and musicians.

Then stick around for a workshop on integrating software and hardware w/ Ableton Live @7PM.

Tuesday

Mmmmaven Recharge Lounge (5-8PM): Come relax and while you’re at it, you can watch Moduloktopus present Keith McMillen Instruments, a leading brand in MIDI instruments (Starts @ 6PM). Listen to Moduloktopus’ latest release:

Wednesday

Mmmmaven Recharge Lounge (5-8PM): You can chill out and  join Mmmmaven instructor Mike McCarthy, on an instrumental processing adventure. Explore ways to sonically shape, modulate, and process live guitar, strings, horns, and vocals. Feel free to bring your musical weapon of choice!

Thursday

Isotope Workshops @ Together Center (12:30-5:30PM): First, come for Drum Design and Music Production. Drums are a vital element to your song, no matter what genre you’re producing. Join experts from Izotope at District Hall to learn about drum design for all different types of EDM. Then come back at 2:30 for a Q+A and again at 4:30 for a workshop on recording vocals!

Friday

Ableton Spaces @ Together Center (1:30-7): First, Natasha Kmeto shows her techniques for editing and adding effects to her vocals while playing live. She will cover the different technologies she uses as well as give a live demonstration at the end.

Then come back at 6PM for a demo with Tensnake!

Mmmmaven Recharge Lounge: Soul Clap Record Fair (5-PM): Boston’s most renowned vinyl collectors, DevNull, Soul Clap, and and Nick Minieri, have collected tons and tons of records for you to dig through! Come  find that classic record you’ve been searching for, or beef up your collection with $1 bins!

Ableton Spaces @ Together Center [cont.] (1:30PM): Generating Music with Plants – Learn how Datagarden uses Ableton Live in tandem with Max for Live to create music from plants’ biological data.

Then at 4, LOL Ableton Push with Jerome LOL and Ableton Certified Trainer Loudon Stearns. Taking an in-depth look at the Ableton Push and the amazing features that completely change music production and performance. Come learn how this instrument can change your workflow both on and off stage.

Beat Academy Live! (12-6PM): Mmmmaven will host an open house with a music tech petting zoo and live demonstrations. Come to our studios and learn about our summer camp Beat Academy, a week long youth DJ program

Every weekday during the Together Festival, you can head over to Mmmmaven studios to relax, listen to music, charge your devices, and participate in awesome workshops.

On Friday, May 16th, come dig through one of the area’s most extensive record collections. DevNull, Soul Clap, Caseroc are all renowned vinyl collectors. They will offer up pieces of musical history, covering genres like house, techno, drum & bass, breaks, hardcore, IDM, hip-hop, and much more. (They’re also playing at the festival!)
