Here at Mmmmaven, our Co-Founder and Executive Director Alex Maniatis, in league with our Managing Director Polina Starobinets, put on the Make It New weekly party in addition to running the school. Of course, our ridiculous supporting staff is always worth a thanks, high-five, or fist-bump!
But for over thirteen years, the award-winning weekly at the Middlesex Lounge in Central Square, brings in guests from around the world to show off the latest in music technology, beat-making, and general fun-having.
For our students, they get the chance to watch a legend do their thing, and for the wider audience, it’s a chance to see some huge global names in an intimate space with amazing sound.
First it was “Roar,” a completely mangling and brutal track from the minimal days. Sounding as if a broken weed whacker had been thrown into the middle of the club–the snarling, bass-free corker got the attention of the entire worldwide underground.
He eventually became a huge player and resident at Trouw which, after Berghain, might have been #2 in the “world’s greatest clubs” listicle. (RIP) Around the world he continues to shake up clubs, with mixes like this intense, and dark masterpiece DJ set, recorded live at Burning Man.
It would be a tremendous waste of space to list all the labels he’s released with but think of your favorite modern dance music label: Yep. That one.
“Bäumel infuses his productions and dj sets with lots of energy and a sense of adventure, creating a sound that is satisfies the mind as well as the body.”
