In a sort of Mmmmaven’s past meets the present, Electronic Beats recently paired up Moderat and Jon Hopkins before their show in Berlin.
As it so happens, Alexander Maniatis, Mmmmaven’s Managing Director and #MakeItNew booking agent, co-promoted Moderat’s show at the Paradise Lounge in 2009. The show also featured a screening of Speaking in Code, my documentary that includes Modeselektor, and opening support from two #MakeItNew residents: Baltimoroder and DJ Die Young.
It was the first show Alex and I ever worked on together.
And now here we are five years later and Moderat has become something of a legend, with amazing music videos and a shockingly advanced live show. Jon Hopkins, on the other hand, played Mmmmaven’s launch party and our recent 2-year celebration at the The Sinclair with Nathan Fake and Clark.
It’s a testament to teamwork and the power of collaboration (which is in fact the theme of this year’s Together Boston).
We’ll let them take it from here.
This edition of Slices on Electronic Beats TV pairs two of the most popular names in contemporary electronic music: Jon Hopkins and Moderat. Both the trio composed of Modeselektor and Apparat, with their album II on Monkeytown, and Hopkins, with Immunity on Domino Records, caused an international sensation in 2013—making it on to everybody’s year-end lists in the process. The two acts are also personally acquainted and appreciate one another’s company. We decided to get together with the four of them for a short chat backstage at Berlin’s Columbiahalle.
Would you like to explore empowering your musical talent with technology? Funny enough, Alex and I started a school where you can do just that.
