3 Reasons Not to Miss #MakeItNew with Deadbeat

deadbeat

1. Germany + Jamaica

Canadian dub techno producer Scott Monteith, better known as Deadbeat, has concocted a unique spin on the genre through both a background in the Toronto rave scene and an obsession with ska and dub. As Resident Advisor explains, Monteith experienced “a musical awakening during a DJ set around ’94 or ’95 made up almost entirely of Basic Channel and Maurizio records,” and the rest is history.

2. Expect the unexpected

Deadbeat has earned widespread acclaim for his laid-back original productions, which trade in “not-quite-dancefloor techno” and “rumbling digital dub.” But don’t assume tonight’s set will keep things downtempo; RA describes his DJ set as “one of the most infectious around.” Deadbeat is anything but predictable.

3. Secret weapon: sound design

Deadbeat is something of a perfectionist when it comes to sound, and he’s got good reason for it. Monteith is a strong proponent of all-digital sounds and productions. He’s even got the technical background to back it up, having worked for Applied Acoustics Systems in developing the Tassman software synthesizer. All things considered, you can trust Monteith to deliver a set that sounds stunning.

All that said, be sure to catch Deadbeat tonight at Make It New.

3 Reasons Not to Miss #MakeItNew Residents Night

make it new 327

1. John Barera is fresh off a rave review from Fact Magazine

It’s the free Residents Night at Make It New, which means time to shine a spotlight on Mmmmaven’s finest. This week, John Barera has already found himself in the spotlight for an enthusiastic review of his new Yen EP with Will Martin in Fact Magazine‘s monthly house and techno column. Kristan Caryl says “Awake” is “like mainlining sunshine straight into your veins.” Quite the endorsement.

2. Coracola has a new track out

Mikey Lee, aka Coracola, just dropped a new Balearic-flavored track, fittingly titled “Balearic Raver Summer Dreamz 2K14.” With the weather still freezing, some summer-y vibes (at an extremely free show) will certainly lift your spirits.

3. It’s free!

Have we mentioned that? Residents Night offers three killer DJs (Alan Manzi joins John Barera and Coracola) at Middlesex Lounge with no cover charge. As in completely free.

3 Reasons Not to Miss #MakeItNew Residents Night

1. The veteran Alan Manzi
Born in North Cambridge, Alan Manzi is literally a resident DJ. He’s been pounding out vinyl and digital sets for as long as we remember, from literally legendary sets back in the in Amherst heyday to Phoenix Landing, Dancing on the Charles to, well, you name it, literally, and Alan’s taken it on. His prowess in the mix still has them coming back for more, and he’s just one of three DJs to catch for free at #MakeItNew.

2. The wunderkind Coracola
Mikey Lee, aka Coralcola, is a bit newer to the mix. Starting off in a hardcore band, Coralcola’s thirst for passionate, emotional music may have taken an electronic turn, but his thirst to keep on the cutting-edge has never lessened. His hunt for new grooves leads him to the darkest places on the internet, where he comes back with gold. His crates are always filled with surprises which you can experience firsthand, cover-charge free, at #MakeItNew.

3. The inimitable John Barera
A #MakeItNew resident since 2012 with an immense respect for the Detroit sound, John Barera has taken his blazing blend of grooves up the charts at the world’s most respected record stores (Hard Wax, Phonica, etc.) while being heralded by established sources such as Groove Magazine and Resident Advisor. Not to mention he and partner Soren Jahan, as B-Tracks, recently played Panorama Bar in Berlin, perhaps the most well-respected club in the world. Did we mention you can see him for free?

#MakeItNew February Preview

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s no less stacked with local, national and international talent at #MakeItNew. Preview the artists who will take over Middlesex Lounge for each of your foreseeable Thursdays below.

2/6 – Ali Berger w/ Resident DJs Alan Manzi and Baltimoroder

02-06-14-MIN-FB

To play the club you have to know the club and young Ali Berger certainly knows #MakeItNew. You’ve likely seen him on the dancefloor over the last few months because as soon as he turned 21 he made his way to Middlesex almost every week. And now the regular guest at nights like Music Ecology climbs into the booth to challenge our crowd with a mix of technoid nastiness.

Not just a DJ, Ali also produces music, most recently a full-length tribute to the legendary TR-707 drum machine. Berger is so knowledgeable about the Ableton program he’s taught inside our school and in fact has a seminar the following night (Friday) which you should do a favor and attend. It’s free.

So is #MakeItNew this week and with Alan and Baltimoroder in the mix and at Ali’s back, the reasons you should skip out this week are approaching zero.

See you there.

2/13 – Bordello and Iron Galaxy w/ Residents Barera and Coracola

02-13-14-MIN-FB

We heart Bordello. Not only because he has the ability to bring an audience to a quivering mess of writhing sexiness, but also for his insatiable desire to keep at the edge of new music. The “new” of #MakeItNew. When he played with his Turbo co-hort Thomas Von Party last July, it was quite rememorable.

This time he’s bringing Iron Galaxy, who specializes in self-proclaimed “techno and house music experiments.” His aspirations balance spacey sounds with aggressive ones; a fitting counterpoint to Bordello’s raw approach. It all falls under the banner of “New Jack Techno.”

Joining them are our own master-blaster duo in Barera and Coralcola.

Enter the realm and leave your inhibitions at the door.

2/20 – Lee Bannon w/ Residents John Barera and Coracola

02-20-14-MIN-FB

Big-time.

From his roots in the Northern California hip-hop collective Pro Era (Joey Bada$$) to his latest jungle-style release for Ninja Tune records, Lee Bannon is a big-time talent. He’s also somewhat of a chameleon, changing styles and selections as you’d expect from such a musical omnivore. Earning high praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Resident Advisor and Fact Magazine, he’s also a producer’s producer, leading the way forward with new thoughts on music and technology and how they mix.

Regardless of all this intellectual chitter-chatter, Bannon cremates the club and #MakeItNew is more than willing to go for a ride.

One’s from here, one’s from outside Worcester. One’s a titanic veteran, one is a big-bearded wunderkind. One’s a Whole Show, the other is in the know. They know exactly how to get you sweaty.

Joining these two is John Barera for a three-headed resident night beast.
