Pitch Building in Ableton

Songwriters are always looking for ways to keep their audience engrossed in the music. To do this, songs need movement, they need to change and develop. But simply switching to a different beat or using a new melody won’t keep their attention… It needs to go deeper than that. A great technique songwriters use across genres is the idea of tension and release. When a song builds tension, it puts the audience on the edge of their seats, waiting for the eventual release. The build up and drop of electronic music is a perfect example of tension and release.

There are hundreds of techniques to create musical tension, but one that’s great for a build up is an increasing pitch. Using the Simple Delay effect in Ableton, you can easily create this effect. Lenny Kiser of DJ Tech Tools has made a great tutorial to show you how:
