Regardless of your political views, there’s no denying that presidential hopeful Bernie Sander is absolutely killing it with youth voters. So, of course he has a house DJ for all of his events. One Mel Sandico aka DJ Mel has been providing Sanders’ events with sets chock full of soul, funk, disco, and old school hip hop. Whether it’s a laidback town hall meeting or raucous rally, DJ Mel always knows just the right tunes to spin.
You might also recognize him from his previous work as none other than Barack Obama’s campaign DJ. This guy clearly knows how to attract the right clientele.
While a DJ at a large event is not uncommon, Mel is bringing a distinctly fresh level of coolness that a normally stuffy political event severely lacks. For instance, the internet went a little loco when word broke out that DJ Mel was blasting Rob Base’s “It Takes Two” at Sanders’ events.
I may be biased, but I’d take Bernie and Base over Kim Davis and Eye Of The Tiger any day.
His music career does not stop at simply DJ’ing though. Sandico is also involved in curating the dance music stage at Lollapooza each year (which is where he essentially met the “booker/promoter” for the DNC back in 2008). To learn even more about Sandico, and first hand accounts of his set at the NH primary, read the full article by the NY Times here.
If you’re interested in learning more about DJing, make sure to look at our courses. Contact me about setting up a free introductory lesson and tour of the studio. Our students really love it. But don’t take my word for it, read what they’ve said about us on Google Places.
