Together Boston is bringing back the exciting & perfect summertime event to celebrate Donna Summer’s legacy.

Last July, price thousands of people gathered at Boston’s City Hall Plaza. It wasn’t a crowded music festival or a sports rally, but instead they convened for a free roller disco party celebrating the late Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco and godmother of “EDM.”

While some people bring their own skates, others rent skates on-site by the custom dance floor. Last year, Dorchester native DJ Kon played funk, soul, disco music, and obviously plenty of Donna Summer. the spirit was vibrant as people showed up in costume, danced on and around the dance floor, and completely let themselves loose.

“Donna would’ve loved it,” said Linda Gaines, Summer’s younger sister.

The roller disco was a huge success, reported the event organizers Together Boston. The eventattracted about 4,000 people. as the Boston Globe said:

By any measure, the event was a success: It attracted a large and far more diverse crowd than most public events in Boston. Cutting across lines of ethnicity and sexual orientation, the party drew not just veterans of the disco era, but also little kids and young adults far removed from the cultural upheaval of the ’70s.

This year, on Friday, June 19, City Hall Plaza will play host to a second Donna Summer Memorial Roller Disco. The family-friendly tribute event will celebrate the life of Donna Summer, who was born and raised in Boston, as an open event with music and refreshments.
