Soundcloud redesign shines spotlight on creator communities

A much needed home screen change

SoundCloud has introduced a refreshed home screen that allows users to see more music from the service’s most popular independent creators. The refreshed home screen features song collections sorted by genre and curated playlists popular in the platform’s community. The new home screen is a welcome update that should help differentiate the struggling service against rival offerings from Spotify, Apple, Google, and Amazon.

Co-Founder Alex Ljung sure is excited:

Ableton Live 10 Around the Web

If you’re doing it right, you already know that Ableton, the Berlin-based music software giant, has announced Live 10, the first major upgrade in the DAW in five years.

Here is what the web is saying:

  • Fact Magazine: “gigantic list of improvements” “the most significant change is that Max for Live is now fully integrated into Live” “new multi-channel audio routing capability for surround sound performances” “improved modulation”
  • The Verge: “a lot of new, notable changes to Live.” “One of the more exciting new features in Live 10 might be initially glossed over by many: Collections.” “at last, the option to export audio as .MP3.”
  • Engadget: “if you start playback mid-note, you won’t hear it — annoying for long strings sounds, for example. A new “Note chasing” feature solves that” “For those (like me) who seem to give their best performance while not recording, there’s ‘Capture.'”
  • DJ Mag: “At the top of the list is a new instrument called Wavetable” “a much needed new delay plugin Echo has been added” “the ability to edit multiple MIDI clips at once”

Here’s some more information in Spanish and in German.

Reverb.com even went so far as to create a playlist of some of the newest sounds you can make:

Stay tuned as we plan on holding some seminars and MeetUps to celebrate the release of Ableton 10. Signup for the newsletter to be sure:

  • Who is Robert Hood?

For those unfamiliar with the techno icon who is playing the 13th Anniversary of Make It New this week, it quite impossible to sum up his career, but this Resident Advisor interview from 2014 (by one-time Boston resident, and Make It New guest DJ, Will Lynch), does a pretty good job.

It’s my goal and my life’s ambition and my vision to give, to bring water and bring food to all who want to listen.

The icon speaks very highly of the music of his parents, the sounds of Pac Man, and the famous Detroit radio DJ, the Electrifying Mojo, who, as Lynch says: “may have had more influence on techno than anyone who ever lived.”

You were designed to do great things. But a lot of people go to the grave not knowing that, not realizing their dreams and their visions, having them manifested and come to pass.

Read the full interview here (one which, according to one comment, might bring you to tears), or just experience the music for yourself this Thursday.
