This week, Berklee student and Mmmmaven alumni Katharine Fountain will share some of her favourite tips and techniques for maximizing Ableton Live’s Drum Rack feature.This workshop will teach you how to choose (and where to find!) the best drum samples, and how to construct a dynamic and natural sounding kit.

Additionally, Katharine will show you how you can use Ableton’s Launch Modes to break free from a creative slump and mix up your beats. Other topics to be covered include workflow, creating breaks, and an overview of genre specific drum patterns and programming.

Katharine Fountain is a singer, songwriter and producer who is currently studying Electronic Production & Design, and Songwriting at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Katharine attended Ableton’s Loop summit held in Berlin in the fall of 2016, where she had the opportunity to meet, share ideas with and work alongside artists, producers and writers from around the world. She considers the experience to be life changing in terms of her development as an artist, and uses the skills, tools and techniques she developed there regularly in her musical productions

She is interested in music from many genres, and draws inspiration from a wide variety of artists. Her influences include Odesza, Flume, RAC, Etta James, Death Cab For Cutie, Beyonce and Lana Del Rey.

Our instructors will be on hand to answer questions and walk you through the basic functions of Ableton Live 9 software. You will also have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of production equipment, including Ableton’s Push controller.

This is an open house style event. Drop by, try out the equipment and meet other science festival goers.

CDJ’s are one of the most influential tools of modern music because they combine the unique ability of turntables with the ease and convenience of new technology. CDJ’s are specialized digital music players that play digital music files stored on USB keys or SD cards. There are many features that CDJ’s have such as loops and beat analysis that are not present on turntables. CDJ’s are becoming more and more popular in the electronic music scene so don’t miss this chance to learn the basics from the best.

Charles Mazzola

Charles Mazzola got his start in New York, studying audio engineering while DJing on the side and organizing parties in Brooklyn’s rapidly expanding warehouse scene. He later migrated to Boston, where he continued to built a reputation with gigs at local parties. His versatile DJ talents, spanning techno, house and disco earned him quick notoriety.

Mazzola has worked with Mmmmaven and Boston’s Together Festival in the past, both booking and performing at major events across the city alongside huge international talent. He’s currently a producer for Mmmmaven’s weekly #MakeItNew DJ nights at Cambridge’s Middlesex Lounge and occupies a resident DJ spot at Phoenix Landing’s weekly Re:Set Wednesday parties. As a DJ, Mazzola has shared the stage with names including LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Soul Clap, Lee Foss, James Holden, Sian, Falty DL, KON, Maxxi Soundsystem, Dusky, Konrad Black, Fred Falke, Juilo Bashmore and more
